Life can be a Pressure Cooker

Life can be a pressure cooker when debt is abound and it seems like there's no way out. Be patient, do what you can, and sooner or later the top will come off, the valves will be released. All will be well again. Keep your cool in the pressure.

National Alumni Association:

A Call to Service

Make no mistake . . . we are proud of Tennessee State University!

Tennessee State University represents an incredible academic and economic asset to Tennessee, the Southeast Region, as well as to the entire nation. The last economic impact study of the University on the Nashville region reported nearly a half billion dollars ($500,000,000), with more than 9,000 jobs created, and attracting visitors who spent more than forty-two million dollars ($42,000,000).

We are proud of Tennessee State University's:

  •  Most recent contribution to Tennessee's successful application for Race to the Top funds and the receipt of $8,000,000 in grant funding as a result.
  •  Selection as the only HBCU in the country and only university in Tennessee named to President Barack Obama's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction---the highest recognition a university can receive for service-learning and civic engagement.

Additionally, we are pleased with her receipt of more than $40,000,000 in other grants and funding this fiscal year from an array of agencies across the country, such as:    (http://tnstatenewsroom.com/category/grants/)

  • $1.6 million awarded to the College of Engineering, Technology and Computer Science to support the NEEC mission to educate and develop world-class naval systems engineers
  • $1.5 million grant initiative designed for economic development and business promotion of limited resource and under-served community residents
  • $800,000 from U. S. Housing and Urban Development Historically Black College and University Program for the Center for Service Learning and Civic Engagement. The three-year grant allows TSU to partner with the city of Nashville and merchants along Jefferson Street on a multimillion dollar project to improve North Nashville.

We feel that the multitude of grants and awards from nationally renowned organizations is a testament to her abilities as a premier institution of higher learning. With its international reach and influences, it is a truly great university, and few universities have accomplished as much as TSU on such limited resources. Tennessee State University has represented the state of Tennessee across the nation and in the world with its cutting-edge research, renowned graduates, recognitions and magnificent athletes. Tennessee should be proud of Tennessee State University.

We are delighted that Tennessee State University's athlete's graduation rates are competitive with other Tennessee public universities.

Data from the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) show that TSU is still doing better than ALL schools in Tennessee at graduating its athletes and holds 1st (first) place among OVC schools. The OVC comparisons on GSR (Graduation Success Rate) reported by the OVC (NCAA Website) reveals:

  • 2006 – TSU GSR - 89% - Exceeded everyone except Samford
  • 2007 – TSU GSR - 87% - Exceeded everyone except Samford
  • 2008 – TSU GSR – Exceeded ALL of the OVC schools including Samford
  •  2009 – TSU GSR - 79% - Tied for 1st place with Eastern Kentucky University.

Most definitely, we say, "Yes"!   This historical normal school, which for nearly 100 years, rooted in giving a people a "lift up", CAN have students in China! We say, "Yes", TSU CAN meet the same "bar" and have the same relevance as 5% of the business schools worldwide! And, we say, "Yes", TSU CAN offer accredited degree program(s) that prepare(s) young men and women for some of the most sought out careers in the world." For example:
  • The 2009 class of the University's School of Nursing completed the state licensure examination with a 100% pass rate, making TSU the only public four-year Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) institution to exceed the national percentage of students passing the National Council Licensure Examination for last year.
  • The College of Business, the first HBCU accredited business school and the first accredited business school in Tennessee, now has a partnership agreement that allows students to receive an MBA while completing coursework in China.
  • The College of Business has added a Human Resources Management concentration to the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) and a newly established minor studies program in entrepreneurship.
  • It has achieved accreditation for another six years from the prestigious Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International
  • (AACSB). Less than 5% of business schools worldwide have earned this distinguished hallmark of excellence in management education.
  • The College of Health Sciences has a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree program which is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).

We extend appreciation to President Melvin N. Johnson, who recently announced his retirement, for his service and support of TSUNAA, along with his administration. In response to this development, the alumni association will take the following actions:

  • Seek and encourage the application to the position of TSU President, of qualified candidates from across the country to provide leadership and to help shape the direction of the University Volunteer to serve on the official Presidential Search Committee and recommend only the best visionary candidate(s) capable of addressing the current and most pressing needs of the University
  • Work with the University to develop and implement special outreach initiatives for our newest students arriving in Fall 2010 and Spring 2011 who are immediately impacted by the recent events
  • Collaborate with the university's leadership to explore means to improve the delivery of appropriate customer and student services
  • Help ensure that an unwavering commitment to quality teaching and learning in the classroom are enhanced by collaborating with the faculty in addressing the needs of this new generation of learners
  • Support the university's recruitment campaign to reach more students in Tennessee, as well as those outside of its state borders regardless of race, gender, geographical location and sexual preference
  • Further engage alumni in its national fund-raising challenge
  • Prepare current students for alumni responsibilities and leadership
  • Keep alumni informed across the globe with accurate and timely information about our University

The obstacles our University face cannot be overcome without the unwavering commitment of faculty, staff, students, and alumni to the principles we hold dear: Think. Work. Serve. As TSU addresses the changing trends in higher education in Tennessee, and throughout the country, we hold her to be true to her historical mission ("lifting people") and we will support her through these tough times!

Choose Your Friends Wisely

Life is partly what we make it, and partly what it is made by the friends we choose.
"
A friend is someone who understands your past,

believes in your future, and accepts you just the way you are."

"…Do not throw your pearls before swine" (Matthew 7:6, NAS).

Do you realize you have treasure on the inside of you? You could say that your pearls are what God has given you to be a blessing to the world around you—your gifts, talents and abilities. When you get around true friends, people who really believe in you, they won't be jealous of your gifts. They won't constantly question who you are. They won't try to talk you out of your dreams. It will be just the opposite. They'll help you polish your pearls, develop your pearls, enhance your pearls, and grow your pearls. In other words, they'll give you ideas. They'll connect you with people they know. They'll help push you further along. If you stay around people who don't value your gifts nor appreciate what you have to offer, that's casting your pearls among swine.

Your inner circle, those who are closest to you, should be people who celebrate who you are; people who are happy when you succeed. They should be people who believe the very best in you. Remember, it's not the quantity of friends that's important, it's the quality of friends. Choose your friends wisely so you can be all that God has called you to be.

A Prayer for Today

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gifts, talents and abilities You have given to me. Help me to recognize the treasure within. Give me wisdom to discern the right relationships You have ordained for me. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
